tick markI’m a freelance medical writer and data analysis consultant. I help researchers and organisations turn complex scientific and clinical information into clear, accurate, decision-ready outputs.

tick markMy work focuses on evidence synthesis, data analysis, and scientific communication. My goal is to help scientists at any stage produce high-quality work by analysing data with integrity, writing with clarity, and reporting with accuracy.

Who am I?

Freelance medical writer Dr Thomas Solomon at Blazon Scientific

I studied at the University of Birmingham, where I completed a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry in 2002 and a PhD in Exercise Science in 2006. I then trained in clinical biochemistry at Derby Royal Infirmary and Queen’s Medical Centre before moving to the Cleveland Clinic in the United States for a postdoctoral fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology.

After that, I spent five years in Denmark. I first led a human physiology research group at the Centre for Inflammation and Metabolism (a.k.a. the Center for Activity Research) at Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), and later worked as an Associate Professor of Molecular Metabolism at the University of Copenhagen.

In 2015, I returned to the UK with a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship from the European Commission. I then worked as a Research Fellow and Associate Professor in Physical Activity and Health at the University of Birmingham.

My academic and clinical research background gave me deep expertise in metabolism, biochemistry, nutrition, and exercise science, with a particular focus on obesity, type 2 diabetes, and wider cardiometabolic health. Over the years, I have led research teams and clinical trials, carried out systematic reviews and meta-analyses, handled biostatistics, and written, edited, and peer-reviewed scientific work.

My publication record includes more than 90 PubMed-indexed papers and more than 7,000 citations. I have also secured major grant funding, delivered invited talks, and contributed to media coverage of health and science topics.

In 2019, I left academia and founded Blazon Scientific to provide freelance medical writing, evidence synthesis, and data analysis services across a broad range of health and medical science topics. Since then, I have supported academic and clinical researchers, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and health/medical news outlets.

Alongside Blazon Scientific, I also contribute research, evidence synthesis, and medical writing to Examine.com. I also run Veohtu.com, a free educational platform focused on thoroughly researched, evidence-based exercise and nutrition science for athletes.

My core skills include evidence synthesis, clinical trial methodology, medical writing, scientific editing, data analysis in R and Python, and science communication for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
